DIABETES CARE SUPERKID
Kaitlyn Amey of Port Huron is
an active 13-year old girl. A seventh grader at Chippewa
Middle School, she plays basketball, is a cheerleader,
and dances five hours a week at the Huron Physical Arts
Center in Port Huron. She enjoys hanging out with friends
and watching the Detroit Red Wings with her dad. She
also lives with Diabetes. Kaitlyn was diagnosed with
Type One Diabetes at age 5. At a young age, she learned
to give herself injections of insulin. She is now hooked
up to a pump that gives her automatic injections, but
she must keep track of the carbohydrates in all of the
food she eats to ensure she gets the right amount of
insulin. Despite needing to monitor the disease 24-hours
a day, Kaitlyn still leads a normal life. “It doesn’t
stop her from anything,” dad Brad Amey said. She agrees.
“Just because you have Diabetes, you can’t let it get
you down,” she said. “You can do whatever you want to.”
