Karen Newman
Voice of the Detroit Red Wings
Fresh out of college at the age of twenty-one, Karen Newman stepped
out of Oakland University prepared to begin her career as an entertainer.
This vibrant, youthful, attractive, and energetic lady was once a
platform diver in high school and always loved sports, as well as,
entertainment.
One of her first big breaks
in the entertainment industry came when she was hired seventeen
years ago by the Detroit Red Wings to sing the National Anthem.
In fact, one of the highlights of Karen's career came while singing
the National Anthem during the Red Wings Stanley Cup run in 1997
after a fifty year drought from bringing Lord Stanley home."Being
a part of that crowd, feeling the electricity in the air, and watching
Stevie (Yzerman) lift the Stanley Cup in 1997, was an incredible
experience. I don't think I have ever sung the Anthem with such
fire and passion as the night we won that first Stanley Cup in
over fifty years. It was magical."
Karen also discussed the challenging
side of the entertainment field stating,"it's a roller coaster ride with
major ups and downs." She indicated her spiritual life as a
Christian has been a foundation to help her keep going through the
tough times. With her five year old twins, Dylan and Kylie, by her
side Karen warmly smiled and shared, "these two gems are my
greatest success in life and keep everything in balance and perspective."
When asked why she became
involved with the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Pro Stars Tour, Karen
remarked, "I think the
time is right for this type of old timers hockey. The Red Wings Alumni
are due to get the recognition they deserve. People need to know
how classy and generous the guys are and that they care for charities."
She went on to add, "I'm really excied to be a part of Diabetes
Care because so many children and adults are effected by diabetes
and don't have the means to get the assistance and education they
need to cope with the disease. I've been blessed with two healthy
children, and I think it's important for us as a community to care
for others as well."
